Natural gas or propane. Staff photo by Gordon Chibroski This 52,000-Btu fireplace insert allows homeowners to use an existing fireplace without burning wood. Staff photo by Gordon Chibroski A Heat and Glow GEM 42 is inset into a stone wall and hearth. WARMTH WITHOUT THE WORK CHEAPER AND EASIER alternatives to traditional wood-burning, masonry fireplaces are easy to find these days. Companies making gas fireplaces, gas inserts for brick fireplaces and free-standing gel-burning fireplaces have grown quickly in the past five to 10 years. HERE IS A quick look at the pros and cons of some fireplace options. GAS FIREPLACESTHE BURNING UNIT is basically a box with a glass front. Inside the box, a gas burner sends flames up between ceramic logs. The unit is vented directly to the outside through a wall, no chimney required. Some models don't need to be vented, but will create moisture in your home. ALL GAS FIREPLACES need to be hooked up to gas lines, and some require electricity. THE MANTLE AND hearth can be custom-built. The gas units usually start at about $2,000, while a finished gas fireplace ranges in price from about $2,500 to $6,000 depending on size and features. THAT'S MAYBE a third of what masonry fireplaces might cost. NEWER MODELS COME with remote controls that let you adjust the flame and the temperature. They give off more heat than wood-burning fireplaces. Popular brands include Jotul, Majestic and Vermont Castings. They're sold at most wood stove and fireplace shops.
